Review: Sports Story is a game that needs more time

When you play certain games, development problems are almost palpable. You can feel how they struggled to implement certain ideas. Can tell when they’re rushing, due to bugs that keep you from completing certain tasks. You may even find that diversification means that what you felt was good in the previous games doesn’t work so well in the second. This is unfortunately true for sports stories, follow the game Golf Story. While the personality was still intact, it was unbelievably broken. Looks like it’s not ready for the audience yet.

not like the original Golf Story, Sports story The narration is rather unfocused. It started with a press conference with PureStrike about investments and pledge for sport and its potential customers. Then you show up at a beach with Uncle Coach, using your son Doug’s privilege to execute a plan. In the end, you’ll be taking on all sorts of sports-related and unrelated quests on this trip to see all the company has to offer.

But again, this is the loosest way possible. There are a few tutorials or intros to explain what you’re doing in Sports story, which isn’t great when going through a game.. It can suddenly go from making you seem like golf to the focus back to suddenly sending you into a volleyball game. Before you can get a sports license or join a game, you may find yourself doing a fetch task like making orange juice, finding flags in the mall for a certain amount of time, Take a stick to hit the ball or catch bees. This also means that you may only have a general idea of what you should do next, even if the task ahead is a simple one. Given the amount of sports it has and the way things are organized, it feels like there’s a bloated feel to it that doesn’t offer the tight, concise, fun adventure the original does. So even though you see baseball cages, BMX racing, cricket challenges, fishing, remote control car racing, soccer, tennis and volleyball inspired challenges in addition to golf Originally, many games were not handled well.

This is due to two main problems with sports in Sports story. One is a number that seems to be thrown in to say they are there. The three best identified and developed are golf, tennis and fishing, all associated with progress. BMX pulls twice as long as a way to cross some gaps or cross certain lines. But for sports like baseball and football, there’s hardly any representation other than doing things like scoring some goals for the challenge or touring the batting cage.

However, all of these sports also rely on response time and accuracy. Tennis is a prime example. You need the right feedback game to not only enjoy yourself, but actually play. There are frame rate issues, which is odd given the nature of this sprite-based game, which means occasional stutters or total lag can frustrate you. It’s disappointing because even when a sport is handled well, response times can ruin the experience.

There are also times when it feels like you can’t advance in the game not because the path forward is vague or there’s no tutorial explaining a certain element, but because Sports story blatantly broken. For example, the reason this review took so long was because of a problem and because I needed to restart the game after being locked out of being able to progress on a mission. Most notably, while on duty at the Tennis Academy, I ended up chatting with the receptionist. Then, when I couldn’t progress, I went online and discovered that doing so triggered an error that prevented me from progressing. Since I couldn’t move forward and didn’t know when a patch would come out, I rebooted. On the second run I started having more problems. Sports story crashed while my orange juice was being made. It crashed while I was catching bees. It crashed while I was going to visit the aforementioned Tennis Academy.

Review: Sports Story is a game that needs more time

It’s a shame, because there are times Sports story can be fun. Scripts can be quite humorous. The sprite work is awesome. The concept is generally sound. Golf Story, only more seems like a winning prospect. It was being overly ambitious that destroyed any goodwill here. Nor would I be surprised if there was some element of it all rushed, with the right amount of time not being dedicated to eliminating problems and tying things together more tightly. With patches, there might be something here! While it won’t reach the pinnacle of Golf StoryI think Sports story can still be a fun game in the end. It will only take two months or more for that to happen.

Sports story available for Nintendo Switch.
