Jessica Smyth, aka Big Piigreleased her biggest and arguably best song collection to date along with her new six-song EP, The sky is bleeding. The Irish artist, who now lives in LA, has released a steady stream of music since her Trip-hop/R&B flavored debut single in March 2017. Crush’n.
The sky is bleeding represents Biig Piig’s fourth EP release in three years and her second for Sony Music. Until Smyth signed with Sony in the summer of 2019, her releases were all standalone. Jessica’s first three EPs form a trilogy and are titled, Big fan of Sesh, Vol I, A World Without Snooze, Vol. 2 and There is no room for patience, Vol. 3.
The Sky Is Bleeding is a collection of brand new songs and continuation from the Spanish single by Biig Piig Cuenta Lo, released in February and her recent collaboration with Emotional Oranges on soul which she shared in early March.
Jessica said, “I feel like I’ve grown through this project” and now she can finally debut. The sky is bleeding after two years of working on her new material that “It feels like my walls are coming down, it feels so good, I’m forever grateful.” Regarding the new record, Smyth commented on her new EP, through a cryptic post, where she shared on her Instagram feed, “That f**king project is a journey, from start to finish, I’m a different person and it’s crazy.”
The sky is bleeding is undoubtedly Biig Piig’s most successful work to date and contains six outstanding pieces of music that have been carefully and skillfully crafted. It feels like there’s been a conscious effort to extrapolate and explore each range of emotions on Biig Piig’s new record. From the soft and tender flair of the opening track Remedies through the excellent ending song American beauty Jess Smyth captivates listeners with her creative artistry and engaging performance.
The first track written on Biig Piig’s latest EP is one of the darkest and harshest. The cut out rearrangement enhances the mood and atmosphere of the song and certainly reflects the state of mind Smyth was in when she performed it. Smyth said, “Baby zombies was the first track and I was in the worst head space, I drank a lot and drugged, just not anywhere well, I remember so sad. “
Thankfully, Jessica Smyth didn’t stay that way throughout the entire EP. She continued, “Fast forward to the end, already American beauty with Zach Fogarty, moved to LA ….. I just feel sober, I do every day when it comes, I’m so calm, happy, like a different person. I think it’s incredible that I think, the power of music in general is amazing. This whole project was really a case of unlike anyone else who would feel where I came from, feel shame and guilt, and generally honest self-loathing. The only thing that understands me is the music. I listen to it all the time. I don’t feel alone. Now it feels like it’s out there and everyone can hear it, it feels like a burden on my shoulders. It was like a conversation I had in my head with myself for two years and couldn’t (share). ”
Smyth started sharing music from her latest project when she released the lead single, Lavender, one month before EP. The Organ Path is an enchanting journey slowly and carefully built into a brooding and captivating tour-de-de. Jessica’s smoldering, almost whispering voice sits atop an isolated drum beat and long keys that leave listeners yearning for the next note.
All six songs on Biig Piig’s fourth EP have their own USP but they’re all held together in a cohesive way by Jessica Smyth’s compelling talent and Zach Fogarty’s superb production. It’s one of our favorite releases of the year so far, we’d recommend checking it out sooner rather than later.
