Results Report and Highlights – Joe Joyce puts the hammer down with a stoppage-time win
Joe Joyce (14-0, 13 KOs) ended a 12-month absence from the ring with a 4th round win over seasoned Christian Hammer (27-10, 17 KOs).
‘The Juggernaut’ proves once again that his pressure and restlessness are two attributes that are definitely nightmares of this level for someone like Hammer. The question is whether in the future they will take the main kick in heavyweight or not?
The Hammers got off to a good start in part thanks to Joyce’s manly defense. His chin absorbed a lot of his right hand and forced the German to fall prematurely.
Right from the first round, Joyce targeted the 34-year-old’s body and was clearly a tactic of his and coach Ismael Salas Joyce started round two in a positive but still letting himself be chin but then Brit marches forward.
Hammer started the third round on high alert, a sign he may now have to defend for a while. Joyce let go of a right hand which unsettled his opponent but was amused by the audience, who could sense the away boxer had given all he could. An overhead butt from Joyce forced Hammer to hold on before a fleeting blow to the back of the head gave Brit the first kill of the battle.
However, the ringing of the bell saved Hammer back to his stool.
Thirty seconds into the fourth and the Hammer is dropped again. The body shots that pay off from the 36-year-old and are starting to do the damage were established in the opening stanza.
Hammer then threw a lottery ticket in his right hand, but Joyce shrugged and began to be impressed with his Terminator. The third knock-out came as Hammer, simply buckling under pressure before a left-hand drive into the middle of the pitch ended the bottom team’s hopes. Referee Victor Loughlin had seen enough and saved the old man from an unnecessary penalty.

Talking to BT Sports Jo Ankier then Joyce credited Hammer’s performance.
“He was playing the game, and he hit me with some shots early on. I had to find a way to handle him and start taking my shots. He’s a tough guy because I hit him with some big blows so I trust him to come out here. “
“I like it very much. It’s good to be back again.”
A constant concern for pundits and fans alike is that Joyce gets hit too hard no matter who he fights.
Joyce offers her own analogy as to why that happens.
“It’s like when you walk in the rain. You have an umbrella but otherwise you might get a little wet. That’s what happened very early on until I started to prepare for the defense and started working my legs and moving my head. Especially since I hadn’t fought for so long, I had to get into the fight a little bit. “
Joyce will now sit back and continue August 20 rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua know that his current ranking gives him a great opportunity to face the winner.
“I’m ready for the world stage,” he said. “I am healthy, I have an engine, a chin, a big heart and big cogs. I am ready for all that is to come.”
“I’m looking to fight the winner maybe AJ-Usyk or maybe Tyson Fury if he comes out. I’m at that level. What a shame [Joseph] Parker can’t do it tonight but let’s see what happens”.
Joyce promoter Frank Warren has revealed that ‘The Juggernaut’ will be back in a few months.
“He will fight on September 24, and we will sit down and talk about the opponent. He got the cobwebs out of his system. The other thing that’s really for me is a worry [was] he broke his wrist and it was a snap, so no problem with it, the strength is there. He has been arrested himself a few times. I’m so glad he finally found his umbrella! “
“Once the rematch between AJ and Usyk happens it will start happening.”
“One way or another, all will be shaken. Joe Joyce is very sociable, he’s a must-challenger and he showed tonight why he’s a must-challenge. “
