Repeated dog names – names that repeat the same sound in two syllables – are some of the easiest names to learn for your new dog. After all, he or she is hearing that new name not once but twice every time you say it!
Technically, these repeated names are called exact repeat words, sentences where the first and second sounds are repeated exactly. (There are also imprecise converters like Okey-Dokey, Flip-Flop, or Hocus-Pocus.)
Repeated words are similar to “baby talk” because this is how we learn to say, babble a sound over and over again. They’re easy for a baby to talk and learn – and they’re quick for a dog to learn, too.
I can personally attest to how quickly pets learn repetitive names. Years ago, we adopted a one-month-old kitten that was abandoned at the post office. We named her Coco. She learned her name faster than any cat or dog we’ve ever had!
