Remembering ‘Enthusiasm’, a racing Sim too weird for its own sake

As a teenager, I walked into GameStop and searched through a bunch of unloved and unwanted PlayStation 2 games, all priced between $1 and $8. That’s not an exaggeration – I have a copy of travel trophy for PS2 mark $1.79 to prove it. On a special visit, I left with Enthusiastic professional racing, a strangely named sim racer developed and published by Konami in order to monetize the hype around Gran Turismo 4 And Forza . sports car racing 2005.

Unfortunately for Konami, enthusiasm released on the same day as the first Forzathat’s probably why this post is titled “Remembrance enthusiasm” instead of “Hey, not all of us are in love enthusiasm?”

enthusiasm It’s a strange game. This is a fact, not an opinion, and is proven by the trailer. Just watch it. I explain it won’t do anything, and if the thumbnail hasn’t piqued your curiosity, nothing will.

That’s the hardest thing to understand enthusiasm ever, but it’s also weird in much more mundane ways of game design. No economics for single player campaign; rather, you were randomly given one of your opponent’s cars after each win. That seems like a great way to sample a wide variety of vehicles, except enthusiasm actively penalize you to change cars.

A complex mathematical formula is played out after each event, determining how many “Enthu Points” you will win from a win, which then announces the “Ranking” that essentially governs the progress of the game. you through career mode. Competing on a car that is inferior to your opponent’s increases the prize money, while collisions in races will decrease it. The bumpy nanny aspect is extremely frustrating, especially for me in my teens. Sometimes it feels like the game doesn’t want me to have any fun. It just wants to confuse me.

In fact, it’s extremely melodramatic, even to the point of Gran Turismo still doesn’t quite match. Case in point: enthusiasm Still one of the only games that ever exactly copy the behavior of automatic transmission and their modulators. Driving on the DualShock 2 gamepad is also quite miserable, but is said to be very satisfying to drive. With that much emphasis on the mid-corner throttle input, there’s absolutely no way the experience on a controller without an analog trigger would go better than anything but disaster. It’s a pity, because the development team is really proud of its physics:

enthusiasm There are also some exotic cars. To my knowledge, this is the only game that has ever offered a licensed Chevrolet Astro or J100 Toyota Land Cruiser. Apparently this is one of two titles featuring the Cadillac Seville STS, the other being Grand Tour Game, which I often forget ever happened. And it also has some of the pillars of the Mang-A-Trailer that are common in today’s vehicles but weren’t in the past, like the E30 BMW M3 and the Fiat 131 Abarth.

Many racing games stand out today including the Nürburgring Nordschleife. But you can give it another name gave his own Green Hell song, the perfect time to go along a round? Don’t think so.

About 15 years after I first started enthusiasm and sat with my mouth wide open watching the trailer that I still didn’t understand. But it’s definitely the best $4 I’ve ever spent on GameStop.
