ReMarkable’s latest update fixes my biggest tablet weakness (and maybe yours too)

Earlier this week, Amazon released a Update for Kindle Scribe, a combination of an e-reader and a digital laptop. The update added several features and improvements to Scribe’s note-taking experience. Not to be missed, ReMarkable has released its own update for Remarkable e-ink notebook 2.

If you have ReMarkable 2, you can check for any pending software updates by opening the Menu from the home screen, then selecting Setting and type in Version in the Software section followed by Check for updates. I’m still signed up for the beta program, but I’m currently running Version 3.3.2.1666 and no further updates are available.

What’s new

ReMarkable Version 3.3 has several improvements and new features. For example, you can now bold any typed text when using Remarkable Type Folio keyboard accessory with tablet. Sounds like a nice addition, but I don’t have a Type Folio and I’ve never used the notable companion apps to type notes.

Also new in 3.3 is the ability to clear your recent recipient list when emailing documents. Again, I’m not emailing anyone the document, so I can’t guarantee how good this change will be — but as someone who likes a clean digital experience, you there should be a way to remove the extra noise.

What I enjoyed the most, and used several times during the testing period, was the ability to go back to the standard 100% zoom level when taking notes.

ZDNET editor-in-chief, Jason Hiner, tested ReMarkable 2’s folio case last month.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been taking notes in the middle of a call or meeting, and somehow, somehow, moving my hand across the screen while I’m writing makes the page zoomed or scrolled for a period of time. no reason. It sounds like a minor issue, but before the 3.3 update, you couldn’t easily go back to the default view.

Instead, you are allowed to pinch, zoom, and scroll until you feel it close. Or as I most often do, exit the notebook and then come back, wasting a lot of time and missing potential notes (not to mention distracting you from the current task).

The experience was so frustrating, I gave up taking notes on ReMarkable 2 for a few months. In fact, I bought one Small iPad and use it as my digital notepad.

In the end, I re-shot ReMarkable 2 and tried to minimize any accidental bumps along the way.

With the latest update, if I happen to zoom in or out, I can now go back to the default view by briefly tapping the button shown at the top of the screen. That simple addition eliminated nearly all of my main complaints about ReMarkable 2.

Oh, but there’s more. in bottom of release notes there’s a quick mention that the update also addresses gestures that accidentally trigger touch, which were the cause of my zoom and scrolling issues in the first place. Indeed, since installing the beta, I haven’t encountered any kind of random scrolling or zooming.
