When Marvel’s Midnight Suns launches on October 7, players from around the world will get to explore the dark, supernatural side of the Marvel Universe alongside the Midnight Suns. As Earth’s last line of defense, this team of legendary Marvel heroes must band together to prevent Lilith, the Mother of Demons, from resurrecting the god Chthon.
In preparation for the battle ahead, the team at Firaxis were excited to not only design the latest suits for iconic heroes, but also give them their signature supernatural look. Midnight sun.
When creating these new suits, we obviously wanted them to look unique, but it was important to retain certain characteristics so that the heroes could be easily recognized even in battle. stress fight. Our initial designs for the Midnight Suns battle suit were somewhat Arthurian, but we ended up opting for a sleeker mix of old and new that speak to a powerful combination of Stark technology and the magic of Doctor Strange.
Strange’s brushstrokes appear on the gilded armored plates used along with Stark’s black ballistic plastic parts. On top of that, the new suits create magical Hellfires! Our goal was to make them look like they were radiating supernatural powers — a modern take on traditional superhero suits.
Here’s an example of how we approached suit design for some of the Midnight Suns, along with hints about the abilities that new Stark and Strange powered suits unlock in-game. play.
Spiderman
Suppressing the coloration of our red and blue sections went a long way to ensuring that Spider-Man was instantly recognizable. We also guarantee the right webbing design; it has a certain shape, design and rhythm. This also applies to his animations, which have a distinct acrobatic style and a combination of extremely cool poses.
In keeping with Marvel’s Late Night Sun aesthetic, we added sharp, dagger-like designs to the chest, back, and arms of Spider-Man’s suit, and used similar shapes. himself when designing his spiderman logo. Even in his black and gold battle suit, Spider-Man is unmistakable as he uses his signature Midnight Sun ability — powering himself up while leaping into the air and hitting into iconic poses with an explosion of Hellfire behind him.
Magik
For Magik’s suit, which has a punk style, we looked at the comic as it was from 1992 Ghost Rider & Blaze: Spirits of Vengeance series for inspiration. Magik doesn’t appear in that comic, but her supernatural ability to teleport across space and time would make her a great fit. To make her look right to the original team in that comic, we added a black leather-encrusted vest, belt, and bracelet to her New Mutants suit.
Magik’s black and gold Midnight Suns battle suit takes its cue from the Magic Eldritch Armor she wears in New mutants and other comics. It turns her into a highly imaginative, medieval heroine that goes well with her Soulsword weapon of choice. Wearing this suit unlocks Magik’s powerful Darkchylde ability, allowing her to simultaneously taunt all enemies and temporarily become invulnerable.
Wolverine
We chose Wolverine’s suit based on his tan and tan from the ’90s because we haven’t seen it featured in many other games. The most important aspects of his appearance that we want to nail are the shape of his classic claws and helmet wings, along with his larger body type that makes him different from the rest of the Midnight Suns.
For Wolverine’s Midnight Suns battle suit, we added sharp silhouette-breaking shapes to the hands, forearms, and boots. We also flared out the helmet wings and added spikes to the panel lines on his ribcage. The result is a very aggressive look that matches the abilities Wolverine has in this suit: his ferocious nature comes to the fore as he presses his claws in flames and attacks multiple enemies. enemies in a frenzied rage.
Ghost Rider
When designing the look and feel of Ghost Rider in Marvel’s Midnight Suns, we took inspiration from the foregoing. Spirits of Vengeance manga as well as his appearance in Brand new Ghost Rider The series starring Robbie Reyes debuted in 2014. His head is transformed into a metal skull that mimics the contours of his classic muscle car, while his suit based on the rider’s suit.
With his exaggerated Ghost Rider emblem and silhouette-breaking golden armor, Robbie’s Midnight Suns battle suit makes him look like a Demon Spirit of Vengeance. It also unlocks his fearsome Penance Stare ability, allowing him to take over the minds of his enemies before destroying them with Hellfire.
Iron Man
Believe it or not, one of our main inspirations for Tony Stark’s Iron Man suit was an iconic Italian sports car from the ’80s, which makes for a flashy attitude. Stark and his penchant for buying expensive cars aren’t nearly as crazy as one might think. The result is sharp, pinched edges and large air vents that give our Iron Man suit a distinctive look, but it’s important not to make it any less recognizable.
Stark’s Midnight Suns battle suit, on the other hand, is designed with exaggerated features to accentuate his abilities. We punch the armor’s silhouette by stretching arms, hips, and legs, plus we have the flames bursting from his Arc Reactor that transforms into a giant pillar of Hell fire when he uses it. uses the suit’s Midnight Sun ability to target multiple enemies with a powerful beam.
