RBC Heritage 2024 standings, scores: Scottie Scheffler is lurking with the top four after Round 2

RBC Heritage is at the top of the leaderboard with four golfers sharing the lead after a second round total of 21-under on Friday. JT Poston, Tom Hoge, Sepp Straka and Collin Morikawa are at 11 under, just one ahead of Ludvig Åberg and the others.

Scottie Scheffler – and this should scare everyone else in the field – is now at 8-under after a 6-under 65 in Round 2. Of course, Scheffler is coming off his fourth win in five matches. This time, however, he has some work to do with nine golfers ahead of him, four of whom are participating in the Ryder Cup.

We take a look at the leaders as well as whether Scheffler can win for the second time in a row following last week’s Masters championship.

Leaders

1. JT Poston, Tom Hoge, Sepp Straka, Collin Morikawa (-11)

These four golfers are all good to excellent at iron play, and all of them, except Morikawa, played well this week. While I like Morikawa a lot on this golf course, I don’t necessarily like him this week because I believe his scores — like last week — are holding up a bit thanks to some Incredibly short game. Morikawa is currently ranked 47th in approach play.

The other three are hitting much better and all retain power at the top despite lacking name recognition. However, the real question at half-way was whether they could hold off more horses behind.

Other candidates

T5. Mackenzie Hughes, Ludvig Åberg, Patrick Rodgers (-10)
T8. Patrick Cantlay, Sahith Theegala (-9)
T10. Scottie Scheffler, Ben An (-8)

Cantlay has a history of playing well on this golf course with three top-three finishes in his last four starts here. His statistical profile over two rounds is impeccable in that he has hit the ball quite well and hasn’t really done anything until this week. He should have won this tournament a year ago and this time he will have a better look at some redemption opportunities.

Ludvig is a problem

One of my favorite statistics over a round or two is which player has the highest performance on the leaderboard and the lowest number of strokes gained. Enter: Ludvig Åberg, who has outperformed the second-best striker on the field by more than two strokes this week, is losing strokes but is still somehow under 10 strokes and very much in the mix going forward. into Round 3.

He was first on approach play, first on the tee and first on the ball after 36 holes. Would you expect anything different from the guy with the best swing in golf today?

“Obviously a lot happened last week and a lot was going on in my mind,” Åberg said. “You can’t really relax playing at Augusta National in those conditions. So I think naturally I’ll be a little bit tired, a little tired, but we’ve got two more rounds to go and my focus is right.” This.”

“When I saw the golf course, it was one of the tournaments I had seen on TV for a long time. This golf course is iconic and this type of golf excites me,” he added about the opportunity to compete. play RBC Heritage. “I guess it’s a little more placement, a little more strategic. So I’m really excited about that challenge.

Scottie…again?

Scottie Scheffler rounded out the top 10 on Friday with a 6-under 65 that he said could have been even better. He finished third in the field in putts, to the surprise of no one, and with three very well-placed returns won for a shocking fourth time in five starts. It’s a course — the Masters, Players, Arnold Palmer Invitational and RBC Heritage — that will compete with the whole thing job of famous golfers like Rickie Fowler.

As suspected, Scheffler shook off some early-week jitters and looked ready to advance to his 38th and 39th consecutive rounds at or below par on Saturday and Sunday. If he does, he may be looking at a red jack to go with his green jack.

RBC Heritage 2024 updated odds and picks

Odds via Sportsline consensus

  • Collin Morikawa: 4-1
  • Ludvig Åberg: 4-1
  • Scottie Scheffler: 6-1
  • JT Poston: 9-1
  • Patrick Cantlay: 10-1
  • Sepp Straka: 10-1
  • Tom Hoge: 12-1

I love Cantlay in this position. He’s just two back, owns the course and is underrated after a weak shot on the West Coast and not much of a track record at the Masters. That 10-1 number is a good number. I also like Tom Hoge at 12-1 and Rory McIlroy at 22-1.
