With lively discussions Pokémon Scarlet and Violet released last year and news about Ash and Pikachu leave the cartoon well, it’s easy to forget sometimes that Pokémon cards are one of the franchise’s most enduring elements. While some will no longer be part of the collectible pool as the years go by, this returning storytelling feature is enough to make us consider returning to the packs.
Noted on Twitter by YouTuber @Purplecliffe, some of the latest Pokémon cards tell a touching little story where the evolution of a ‘mon’ is placed side by side. In the example below, we see little Ralts and its young owner going through life together moving house, giving birth, and growing old. Take a look at the following images for yourself, we have a little something in our eyes…
It’s true, this may not be the most dramatic three-act structure we’ve seen, but we can certainly imagine some of the Pixar producers out there taking all of this as raw. psychological damage before the movie’s release.
This isn’t the first time evolution cards have been used to tell a story. The Legendary Treasures Collection similarly obscures us with the Tepig/Pignite/Emboar trilogy, and the Radiant Collection uses Charmander’s evolution in a similarly moving way. Seeing the Ralts join the club is a great feeling, even if we weren’t expecting it’aww‘-ing on some Pokémon cards today.
