Remember right before release The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom when rumors began to spread that Princess Zelda maybe as a playable character? That wish was never granted (sorry, spoilers), but the Hylian queen will get her time to shine this September when The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom give her the main role.
Of course we do, pump to finally get the chance to play exclusively as Zelda in a mainline game, but being a 2D, top-down adventure, there were still a few of us wondering what a game starring the Princess would look like. Breath of the Wild and the art style of Tears of the Kingdom.
As with most conceptual exercises like this, it didn’t take long for an artist on Twitter to come up with an answer for us. And yes, it looks pretty cool.
That is @TobyFoxArt who took on the challenge this time around, trying to recreate the Zora moment from the Echoes of Wisdom trailer in the series’ modern 3D. And he did just that, changing the perspective and redesigning the character models to match the TOTK aesthetic. There was even a HUD added to really emphasize the immersion! You can find the finished product in the tweet below.
In one video shows his processFox estimates that the project took nearly 24 hours to complete, and we can see why with all the detail crammed into it! We’re especially big fans of the little Smash Bros. Game refer to the left, with the Princess’ Special Moves (Din’s Fire, Farore’s Wind, and Nayru’s Love) replaced with BOTW’s Divine Beast icons.
It’ll probably be a long time before we get a 3D open world game with Zelda as the controller, but hey, at least we know it’s going to look fun.
