Puspakom becomes first licensed vehicle inspection service provider – two other companies have applied

In March last year, it was announced that Puspakom would no longer exclusive on motor vehicle inspection services from September 1, 2024, while the government has decided to open this segment to other qualified companies after Puspakom’s current contract ends on August 31.

Although the sector has opened up to other competitors, drivers who need to undergo mandatory vehicle inspections for both commercial and personal vehicles will still have to use Puspakom’s services for the time being, as the company is the sole provider at the moment.

As the Ministry of Transport indicated earlier today, the agency has been designated as the first company to be allowed to conduct vehicle inspections under the new Road Transport Act (Act 333). According to Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Puspakom can provide vehicle inspection services at designated inspection centres and mobile inspection services nationwide.

He said close to 50 companies have expressed interest in providing vehicle inspection services after attending a briefing on the application process. “The ministry has listed the licensing conditions, including suitable land, technical capacity, machinery and equipment, similar to Puspakom to ensure fairness and transparency. Any company that passes the assessment will be granted a license, just like we granted a license to Puspakom today,” he said, adding that the ministry would soon announce the successful applicants.

While the deadline for applications is October 31, Loke said the ministry will keep an open mind on the matter, as New Straits Times report. “We will see how many companies apply. If we need to reopen the application, we will do so,” he said.

Any company wishing to enter this sector will have to meet all the same conditions and regulations as those applied to Puspakom. These include providing services in full compliance with the scope, standards and procedures of motor vehicle inspection, appointing personnel who meet the prescribed qualification requirements and using computerized inspection equipment regulated and approved by the Land Transport Authority (JPJ).

Additionally, vehicle inspection service providers may only charge established inspection fees and they are not permitted to provide vehicle repair/modification services or sell replacement parts.
