Proton X90 Buyer’s Guide – Large 7-seater SUV coming in 2023

Proton X90 is probably the next car launched by Proton. This is a large 3-row 7-seat SUV in the D-segment that competes with models like the Hyundai Santa Fe.

We’ve seen its camouflage prototypes run around Malaysia’s roads since mid-2021. It was originally scheduled to launch in Q3 2022 (current time period) but due to Control Orders motion of Covid-19, Proton X90 will be launched in 2023.

Which Geely model is the Proton X90 based on?

The Proton X90 is based on the Geely Haoyue, a D-segment SUV also known internationally as the Geely Okavango.

The Geely Haoyue is offered in China with a 1.8-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine mated to a 7-speed DCT transmission, but in the Philippines market, where it is called Okavango, it uses a 3-cylinder engine. – 1.5 liter cylinder with 48V. mild hybrid system.

What engine will Proton X90 have in Malaysia?

Protons exhibited 48V 1.5 liter three-cylinder hybrid system before returning in November 2021. The engine produces 190 PS at 5,500 rpm and 300 Nm of torque from 1,500 – 4,000 rpm. So it’s highly likely that at least one variant of the Proton X90 will have a 48V mild hybrid system.

We say at least one variant because we think it’s likely that a non-hybrid 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine option could also be available, with the 48V hybrid being offered only in regular models. High specs. This will be the same way the Proton X70 MC comes in both 1.5 liter and 1.8 liter options.

In its non-associative tone installed in Proton X50 and Proton X70 MC, 1.5 liter engine for a capacity of 177 PS and 255 Nm. This version of the engine is locally assembled at Proton’s Tanjung Malim plant.

In case you were wondering how the X50/X70’s engine can power a larger vehicle like the X90, the Geely Philippines website curiously cites their Geely Azkarra (X70) weighing 1,705 kg, in when the Okavango (X90) is 1,610 kg, so it is actually lighter although larger.

How big is Proton X90?

Proton X90’s Geely Haoyue sponsorship vehicle is the Geely brand’s largest SUV. It measures 4,835 mm long (316 mm longer than the X70), 1,900 mm wide (+69 mm) and 1,785 mm (+91 mm) high, with a wheelbase of 2,815 mm (+145 mm).

Here’s how its size compares to a few other three-row vehicles it might be competing with.

We can see that Proton X90 is somewhere between Hyundai Santa Fe (smaller) and Mazda CX-8 (larger) in size.

We decided to include the Kia Carnival in the absence of a Kia Sorento on sale at the moment. You may ask what is the logic of comparing an SUV to an MPV, but the fact is that it was Proton who once decided Proton X90 benchmark compared to previous generation Kia Carnival on the roads near Genting Highlands.

For those looking for a three-row vehicle, there can be cross-shopping between SUVs and MPVs in the same price range.

How big is the third row of Proton X90?

We can’t say for sure if the Proton X90’s seats will be able to fit an adult comfortably but from the photos of the Geely version of the car, they certainly look like they can.

Access the third row by tilting the second row forward. As you can see from the photos, the third row of seats even have their own air vents just below the windows.

How big is the boot of the Proton X90 with the third row of seats in use?

From the two photos above, you can see that the Proton X90 will most likely have a large trunk area with the third row of seats folded down, but if using the third row, the trunk space is quite small.

Apparently it can still fit a folding bike like in the promo photo with all three rows used.

The official spec sheet quotes 257L with the third row up and 1200L with the third row down.

How much will Proton X90 cost?

In the Philippines market, Coolray (Proton X50) is priced from PHP 1,073,000 (RM85k). The Azkarra (Proton X70) starts at PHP 1,788,000 (RM142k), more expensive than the X70 in Malaysia, but keep in mind that it’s the version that includes a 48V hybrid system.

The starting price in the Philippines of the Okavango (X90) is surprisingly cheaper than the X70, at PHP 1,503,000 (RM120k) but this goes all the way up to PHP 1,765,000 (140k) for the highest spec.

With the Proton X50 priced from RM86,300 to RM113,300 and the Proton X70 priced from RM98,800 to RM128,800, we think the Proton X90 will easily be priced in the RM130k-150k range.
