Councilors in York have voted unanimously to strip Prince Andrew of his freedom of city status following his legal settlement with Virginia Giuffre.
York City Council members, representing all of the major parties, voted on the honorary stripping motion he was introduced to in 1987.
Lib Dem Darryl Smalley, York City Council executive member for culture, recreation and community and proponent of the proposal, said: “I’m delighted to see councilors from all of them. both sides supported the proposal and made it clear that it was no longer relevant to Prince Andrew representing York and its inhabitants.

“The removal of this honorary title sends the right message that we as a city stand with abuse victims.
Several councilors and members of the public who spoke at a meeting at York Racecourse on Wednesday also called on the Queen or the Government to strip Andrew of his Duke of York title.
Labor councilor Aisling Musson said she wanted to remove “the stain of her connection to this city”.
Mr Smalley added: “The next logical step now is for Prince Andrew to do the right thing and give up his title of Duke of York.
“If he fails to do so, the Government and Buckingham Palace must step in to strip him of his title to ultimately end Prince Andrew’s connection to York.”
Councilmembers said he was the first to have the City’s Freedoms removed.
There are two official abstentions – from the Lord Mayor and the elected Lord Mayor.
Both Buckingham Palace and a spokesman for the Duke of York declined to comment.
