Porsche confirms new electric SUV project, could be mainstream on Cayenne

The next-generation Porsche Macan will be electric, but on Monday the automaker announced another, more premium electric SUV project.

“We plan to add a new all-electric luxury SUV to our exciting portfolio,” Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said in a press release on Market Day. Capital of the car manufacturer. Produced in Leipzig, Germany, the new EV is part of Porsche’s strategy to tap into higher-margin market segments.

The emphasis on luxury and high margins suggests something that sits quite high in the Porsche model hierarchy, perhaps even above the Porsche Cayenne SUV. The new model could also be an electric equivalent to the Cayenne, in the same way that the Taycan is a grand-touring equivalent of the Panamera with flavors from the 911, Porsche’s sports car amulet.

Taycan became a leading technology for Porsche’s lineup, and a comparable electric SUV could propel the brand further in that direction. Porsche plans to start build its own battery cells—Mainly for racing. Executives believe this is crucial to maintaining a technological edge in the coming EV era similar to that of Porsche with the internal combustion engine.

Porsche did not discuss a timing for this all-electric flagship SUV, but noted that the electric Macan will arrive first. It is also planning an electric variant of it 718 family sports car (Boxster convertible and Cayman coupe), launched around the middle of the decade.

Earlier this year it confirmed a charging network of its ownalong with project 718. The first terminal is scheduled to open in early 2023, and will then be rebuilt.
