Given the franchise’s rich history since the release of the first game in 1987, we imagine there’s quite a bit of starting point for fans. After all, the beauty of Final Fantasy is that, aside from a few repetitive choices, each game is its own monster; a contained story that requires little or no knowledge of other games.
With that in mind, we wanted to know where to start with Final Fantasy. Have you been there since the beginning? you started with Final Fantasy VI? What do you think about VII? Or did you delay it until the upcoming launch Final Fantasy XVI on PlayStation 5? Have Therefore Many choices; it will be interesting to see the original story in your Final Fantasy.
As for us? Well, we asked around the office and the results were varied. “I started with IVs on the DS,” says editor Gavin. “Honestly, I’m not sure I’ve actually finished it. Don’t overlook that, though.” Sorry, Gavin. On the other hand, Alana says she’s played “all the major games at this point (except XI), but my first game was Final Fantasy IX on PlayStation. Don’t worry, it wasn’t long before I was playing a Nintendo-based FF – it was the original thanks to the GBA remake.” And finally, “I started with something pretty obvious: Final Fantasy VII,” says Ollie : “I needed a lot of help from my brother, because my exposure to JRPGs was severely limited at the time”.
One thing to keep in mind with this: we’ve only included each game once in the poll below to avoid any unnecessary confusion. So, for example, if you start with the DS remake of Final Fantasy IV, just choose ‘Final Fantasy IV’ from the poll and can leave a comment on the platform of your choice.
