“Pigcasso” sparks conversation about art, agriculture and climate change with unusual paintings

Art, as it is said, is subjective – its beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and so is its meaning!

While a painting’s color or composition may grab a collector’s attention, so should its context.

In the case of Pigcasso and her vibrant, eerie landscapes, it’s like a case of all three!

Based in Franschhoek, South Africa, Pigcasso was destined for the slaughterhouse before she was discovered by artist and activist Joanne Lefson.

Lefson runs Farm Sanctuary SA, is home to many kinds of animals. However, Pigcasso is special. Lefson claims that the pig ate everything in her barn except for the paintbrushes left there – her first step towards artistic greatness.

“With some positive reinforcement from Lefson, Pigcasso started drawing”, their official website speak, “And the rest is pig history!”

The painting process is an extraordinary collaboration between man and pig. Lefson chooses colors; Pigcasso held the brush in his mouth and moved it carefully across the canvas.

All originals are signed by Pigcasso. “

The pair’s partnership benefits Lefson’s reserve and also provides her with a platform to speak out for causes she cares about, which are factory farming and connections. There is no denying between unsustainable agricultural practices and climate change.

“Who would have thought that a pig rescued from slaughter in 2016 would rise and inspire a mass awakening among farm animals, what we eat- and the impacts its direct, devastating impact on the lives and welfare of animals and the environment,” Lefson wrote on Instagram.
