Photography talent: Some useful tips

Yes, the video says it’s for posing women, but it works for everyone. It’s for posing, that’s the comfort level, and it will help you make a more successful set. Here are my three tips for helping models have a more successful photo shoot.

5 Tips to Help You Have a More Successful Photoshoot

1. Less lights, more comfort: I’m a fan of c stands and lights everywhere. It looks like a higher production and helps my ego, but honestly, for a newer model or theme, it can be overwhelming. Here’s why: every now and then, put yourself in their shoes and see if their point of view is intimidating. Since many of your clients have little to no studio experience, imagine how intimidating all those lights and stands can be. Don’t need something? Let it out.

   Same with humans. You don’t have to surround your model with their hair, makeup, wardrobe, assistants, friends, etc. Let them sit comfortably aside. They are still viewable, but out of the model’s view. Take a look and see how comfortable she/he feels after you clear the way!

2. You get paid for your opinion: That means you should give them and not keep them. Suppressing idle emotions is actually placing more value on one’s own comfort than on their growth. You can say: “it’s not a good angle for you, try this” or “it’s not your best angle. Try moving your head to this position and it looks so much better. !”

   You get paid for your opinion and expertise. Share them boldly but kindly.

3. They are human: This is something crazy. Sometimes, we forget that the subject is another human being and they are guests in our space. How would you treat your butler? You would treat them like a king or queen, wouldn’t you?

   When a model arrives and is “stuck” in the glamor, spend some time sitting with them and connecting. Talk about what’s happening in the culture, about the news, traffic to the studio, or even what they did differently. Connect with them. This helps them get comfortable more quickly, helping you get better shots early in the shoot.
