Philippines ferry fire: At least 7 dead and 120 rescued after fire | World News

At least seven people have died after a Philippine high-speed ferry carrying 134 people caught fire.

The incident happened shortly before the boat docked at Real Harbor in Quezon province, about 37 miles (60km) east of the capital Manila.

It left Polillo Island at 5am local time and made a distress call at 6:30am.

Many of the 134 passengers and crew were forced to jump into the water and others were rescued by ships in the area, coast guard officials said.

Five women and two men have died, a statement said.

Authorities say at least seven people are still missing.

Another 23 people were injured and taken to hospital, including the captain, after a fire broke out in the engine room of M/V Mercraft 2.

Pictures released by the coast guard showed the ship engulfed in flames, before it was brought under control and towed the wreck ashore.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear but the Philippines, an archipelago of more than 7,600 islands, has a poor track record in maritime safety.

Vessels are often overloaded, poorly maintained and enforcement of safety regulations is weak.

In December 1987, more than 4,300 people died in the world’s worst peacetime maritime disaster after the Dona Paz ferry sank after colliding with a fuel tanker.
