PGA Tour to enhance four other tournaments, generate 13 big-money events starting in 2023, according to report

A new era of the PGA Tour will begin in 2023. After announcing later this summer that nine of its 2023 tournaments will be high-profile high-profile events, the PGA Tour will increase that number of advanced tournaments to 13 per season with 12 of those 13 events paying golfers $20 million or more.

According to multiple reports, these big time, big money events will feature all of the top players in the world, with the Phoenix Open, RBC Heritage, Travelers Championship and Wells Fargo Championship being the four. Latest additions, each Golfweek.

Those events will be the Tournament of Champions, the Genesis Championship, the Arnold Palmer Tournament, the Players Championship, the WGC-Dell Technologies Match, the Memorial Tournament, the St. Jude, BMW Championship and Championship in the Advanced category.

In total, 10 of the 13 advanced tournaments will have a $20 million prize pool. The only events with different amounts are the Tournament of Champions ($15 million), the Player Championship ($25 million), and the Championship ($75 million for the FedEx Cup overall. ).

Here are 13 PGA Tour events where all the top players in the world agree to play together at the current celebrity hotel meeting during the 2022 BMW Championship. In addition, these players will ostensibly play four major championships to bring their total guaranteed appearances to 17 per season. Maybe they can also be asked to play three add PGA Tour events on the calendar as a way to spread star power across non-elevated tournaments. That could be a total of 20 events over the course of the 2022-23 PGA Tour season for the game’s top players.

Those golfers, defined annually as the 20 highest achieving players in the Player Impact Program, have agreed to play in these enhanced events in the future as a way to combat the Golf Tournament. The newly launched LIV features limited events (14 in 2023) in which all the top players in that league play.

The only top ranked players to have left the PGA Tour for LIV Golf are Dustin Johnson and Cameron Smith. Although other big names have gone, none have made it into the top 20 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Rory McIlroy said earlier this year following a Delaware players-only meeting before BMW in Delaware. “I’m talking about all in the same league, all in the same week.”

Functionally, this enhanced event pipeline creates two different tournaments for the PGA Tour. There will be 17 advanced tournaments (including major championships, run by non-PGA Tour organizations but considered PGA Tour events) and then 30 non-advanced tournaments, most of which among them will not be the highest ranking of the PGA Tour stars. However, this strengthens star power in a meaningful way and packs it into fewer events rather than spread out throughout the season.

Also, it looks like the PGA Tour will rotate some of these advanced event wallets across different tournaments, such as AT&T Byron Nelson which will be a premium event in 2025 and for those in the Dallas market / Fort Worth a chance to see all the best golfers in the world. This could result in an overall better fan experience than the status quo.

“Our top players have always supported the Tour, helping us deliver an unprecedented product to our fans, who will be guaranteed to watch the best players compete against each other for 20 years. events or more throughout the season,” PGA Tour commissioner Jay told Monahan at the Tour Championship earlier this year.

“This is an extraordinary and unprecedented commitment, a testament to who these people are and what they believe in. Now, our top players rally around this organization. and committed to a portfolio of tournaments like never before, I think our fans, our partners, our players will love it. there’s so much more to it.”
