Maverick is a sweet little Jack Russell Terrier that was found lying on the ground with horrific injuries. Chris, a volunteer in our rescue, saw Maverick dragging his hind legs and called us right away. This poor dog must have been dragging for a long time because there are scratches and sores on his body. We don’t think he has a chance to survive.
During his first vet visit, it was determined that his spinal cord had been severed and that he would never walk again. The vet said he was feeling nothing and his medical care could be astronomical, estimated at $6000-$8000. Should we die for this poor dog ? We’ve all heard stories of dogs leading happy and fulfilling lives while paralyzed and wheelchair-bound, so why not give it a try?
The vet took an x-ray and realized his back was broken. In addition, his leg was severely broken, his spinal cord was completely severed, and he was unable to control his bladder or bowels. We had to make a difficult decision.
When I went back to see Maverick, he had melted into my arms. We knew we couldn’t let him down and promised to help him. On the recommendation of the neurosurgeon, we will save his life. He spent two nights at the emergency vet on fluids and antibiotics. His CT scan revealed something both horrifying and inspiring: his spinal injury at least a month ago. What happened to Maverick a month before he broke his leg? We will never know.
It’s been a few months now, and Maverick has begun to move his legs. That is a miracle! In all conditions, he is a fun, loving boy and we are grateful to have given him a chance. He is currently in a wheelchair and he receives movement therapy every day. We hope that one day Maverick will walk again!
