Panasonic announces the Lumix GH7

Panasonic has announced the latest version of its flagship GH series Micro Four Thirds camera, the Lumix GH7. At the heart of the new video-focused camera is a newly developed image sensor—the same 25.2MP BSI CMOS sensor found in Lumix G9 II. Notably, this gives the GH7 Panasonic’s “Phase Hybrid” phase-detection autofocus system and faster readout speeds, promising better image quality and 13 stops more dynamic range. It also bodes well for the camera’s tracking capabilities, which feature AI-powered object detection, including humans and animals as well as cars, motorbikes, trains and planes. The good news for underwater shooters is that the GH7 has no external changes from its predecessor—the dimensions are the same, all buttons and ports are in the same locations—so the case is designed for The GH6 will fit the new camera.

With a focus on video, the GH7 offers a variety of internal recording options, including standouts: ProRes 422 HQ 5.7K/30p mode and ProRes RAW HQ—in a full-use 17:9 aspect ratio. sensor width set. Like its predecessor, the GH7 offers C4K/60p and 4K/60p 4:2:2 10-bit and 1080/240p 4:2:2 10-bit recording, and it can also shoot 4K /120p oversamples without cropping, though at 4:2:0 10-bit. The camera is capable of recording simultaneously to an internal CFexpress Type B card and an external recorder via the full-size HDMI port.

In terms of still photography, the GH7 performs just like the G9 II, which is no bad thing. In addition to 10 fps continuous shooting with the mechanical shutter, you also get 60 fps with continuous AF or 75 fps with single AF using the electronic shutter. There is also the ability to pre-shoot up to 1.5 seconds at the same frame rate. Rounding out the specs is the G9 II’s 7.5-stop in-body image stabilization, 3.68-million-dot OLED with 0.8x magnification (up from 0.76 times on the GH6) and the ability to record 4 channels of 32-bit stereo (when using the optional DMW-XLR2 converter).

Available in July, the Panasonic Lumix GH7 will cost $2,200.
