Only new EVs with CHAdeMO returned unchanged

The Nissan Leaf 2024 enters the new model year unchanged and is the last all-electric vehicle produced to use the CHAdeMO connector for DC fast charging.

Prices start at $29,235 with a required destination fee of $1,095, up $340 from model year 2023. As with the previous year’s model, the Leaf lineup consists of two models, the base model being the Leaf S with a 40 kWh battery pack for a 149-mile range according to EPA standards and a single electric motor sending 147 hp, and 236 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels.

Starting at $37,285 with destination ($390 more than the 2023 model), the Leaf SV Plus has a 60-kwh battery pack that boosts range to 212 EPA-compliant miles. Power has also increased, to 214 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque.

The current generation Leaf dates back to the 2017 model year, but has received several updates for 2023, including replace batteries that did increase efficiency a bit. Subtle styling changes and a revamp of available features are also part of the update.

With the introduction of the Ariya, Nissan now has two electric models with two different fast charging standards. The first-generation Leaf used CHAdeMO when it was essentially the only DC fast-charging standard, and Nissan kept it for the Leaf’s redesign in 2017—with recent services finally being able to take advantage of it. use its bidirectional charging capability. But Nissan chose the more popular Combined Charging Standard (CCS) for Arya.

That makes the Leaf the only new EV for the US market with CHAdeMO, although the Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In Hybrid also uses it (the Leaf and Outlander PHEV have both a CHAdeMO port and a J1772 port for Level 2 AC charging). As we have emphasized recently, there are many places to quickly charge the Leaf. According to Department of Energy data, as of June 2023, there are 4,779 charging sites offering CHAdeMO with 6,930 individual connectors. That’s less than the Tesla and CCS connector, but serves a smaller number of vehicles.
