On Call Musicians volunteers bring live music to hospital patients

Performers range from local pros to big-name artists like musician and actor Charles Esten, who starred on Netflix’s “Outer Banks” and CMT’s “Nashville.” Performances for demanding patients are scheduled weekly at some hospitals and twice a month at others, based on demand. Musicians can also video call individuals or stream a performance to multiple patients or hospitals while taking song requests or answering questions. While programming is free for hospitals, many people support the program through donations.

“HCA Healthcare’s decade-long partnership with Musicians On Call has proven beneficial not only for the community,” said Joanne Pulles, HCA’s vice president of community and president of the nonprofit organization. patients but also their families and hospital staff.

“If you [as a clinician] can see the patient relax and have a better care experience, or if you’re a family member in the room, you’ll feel the benefit as well,” says Pulles.

Musicians On Call President and CEO Pete Griffin said many hospitals are looking to partner with the organization. To meet growing demand, in December, the carrier announced it would change its delivery model from manual scheduling to an online platform. The new system, made possible through a $1 million donation from HCA Healthcare, will launch in late 2023, making it easier for patients to access their dose of music.

“The amazing thing is that in just one song—just a few minutes—the entire energy of the room is transformed,” says Griffin.
