Off-grid Hotel Hyundai powered by Ioniq 5 EVs

An all-electric pop-up hotel has opened in the UK. It’s called Hotel Hyundai, and it helps demonstrate the load-carrying (V2L) capacity the automaker is building on its vehicles.

V2L allows cars to discharge electricity and even approved for EV-to-EV sạc charging. In this case, a fleet of Ioniq 5 hatchbacks powers off-grid hotel rooms, restaurants and bars, and even cinemas, according to Hyundai’s press release. The temporary hotel is located in Essex, about an hour from central London.

Each Ioniq 5 provides AC power at up to 3.6 kW. That power flow through an adapter Allows standard home appliances to be plugged into the car. It is also possible to plug things into the sockets in the cargo area.

This isn’t a long-term solution — Hotel Hyundai will only be open for 14 nights from October 19 to November 5 — but it shows V2L’s capabilities.

One Hyundai Home Ecosystem has been teased, allowing owners to get electricity from their cars for home appliances and other electrical needs, but it hasn’t arrived yet. The Ford F-150 Lightning is the first vehicle that allows for reality off-grid home backup capabilities, under warranty.

General Motors also said that they want their car become a home power bank, and is beginning to test the concept with a California pilot program. In partnership with utility company Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), GM will allow some customers’ homes to receive electricity from electric vehicles during power outages. GM said in March that it plans to test this capability in the summer of 2022.
