Nissan can build Fisker Alaska electric pickup truckas well as derivative products sold under its own brand name, Reuters reported on Friday.

The report, based on anonymous sources familiar with the matter, claims Nissan is in “advanced talks” to invest in Fisker, with a deal possibly closing later this month. According to the report, the terms said to be being discussed include a $400 million investment in the development of Alaska, with production at the US Nissan plant starting in 2026. Nissan would then “process create its own electric pickup truck on the same platform”.

Such a deal could be a lifeline for struggling Fisker. The company announced Thursday that it is looking for one Potential partnership with a major auto manufacturer may include investment, development of one or more electric vehicle platforms and manufacturing in North America. This came out in Fisker’s fourth-quarter 2023 earnings report, in which the company also expressed doubts that it could continue as a going concern without additional investments.

Fisker’s only current model is the Ocean electric SUV, manufactured by Magna in Austria. Production begins in November 2022 but deliveries are happening at a slow pace due to a number of issues. In its earnings report, Fisker said it aims to deliver 20,000 to 22,000 Oceans by 2024. Many of those will go through franchises, which Fisker is now targeting after testing original pure direct sales model.

First introduced in 2021, Fisker Alaska was fully revealed last August alongside about 30,000 USD Pear urban electric vehicle and the $385,000 Ronin flagship GT. Fisker at the time said the Alaska aimed for a base price of $45,400 and a range of 230 miles to 340 miles. The company also claims that the Alaska will be the lightest electric pickup truck in production.

As shown in 2023, Alaska is based on a stretched version of the Ocean platform. But CEO Henrik Fisker previously told Green Car Reports not to assume Magna will build it either. Indeed, the company has said since launch that Alaska will be American-made. And now it may have found a way to make that happen.
