Nissan dealers across Europe are about to quiet down a bit with the discontinuation of the R35 GT-R for that market. Thanks to new driving noise regulations that went into effect on July 1, the R35 is made completely illegal for sale. It’s clear that the car has been around for quite some time these days, but somehow it’s still as successful as it was when it was launched in late 2007. Nissan didn’t want to go to the trouble of making it. redesigned the car to pass the new regulations, so it will go into retirement at breakneck speed.
Back in 2007, the 997-generation 911 appeared in the press. R35 has been welded over three generations of 911 Turbo and two additional generations main innovation. In all that time, the GT-R has become more or less the normfor the Nissan brand, taking on all models and leaving most of them in its dust. This doesn’t seem to bode well for the future of cars around the world, as it has been discontinued in Australia. It will work in Asia and America for a while, but obviously on its final thread.
Nissan spokesman told TopGear.com: “13 years after being introduced in Europe as an icon of usable high-performance automobiles, we can confirm that production of the GT-R in Europe will be ends March 2022 due to new UK and EU driving noise regulations starting 1st July 2021.”
The GT-R has been a performance icon for decades, and the R35 generation took things as far as they could. From the speedy Nurburgring to the ultra-luxury GT, the GT-R has pretty much done. The supercharged monster has earned acclaim over the years, and you should probably buy one while you still can.
It’s interesting that the GT-R is about to be discontinued because of new noise laws. I’ve never really found it to be a particularly noisy sports car, and there are certainly some that are much louder. Will this law kill the raucous Jaguars or 911 GT3s in the world? I hope not.
