Nissan Recently there have been big long-term plans laid out in Ambition 2030 Initiative Prioritize technology, sustainability and excitement over global volume. Automakers already have Ariya EV on the road next year, bringing a new powertrain and a new design language. It is also about to enter its fourth season in the Formula E World Championship racing series, taking over from the sister brand Renault so the following can focus on Formula first. Nissan SVP of global design Alfonso Albaisa and his team have put it all into a blender, and released the single-seat Ariya concept, delivering the the intersection of powertrain into a heavy-duty carbon fiber racing chassis.
The concept’s distinctive V-Motion grille is the most obvious connection to the road CUV, but there are similarities throughout, as if the designers decided to give Ariya its Boss Battle Final Form. The company says there’s more here than just a render presented at the Nissan Futures event in Yokohama, Japan. The press release says the digital exercise becomes “a testbed for future technological evolution” that “could help bring excitement from the track.”
If that happens, part of that excitement could be the new design language. Albaisa explains that this philosophy comes from the Japanese words “shun” and “sho”, the old meaning run fast and easy, that is, levitate with power and grace.
Before we find out what that might look like on a retail model, we’ll have the 2023 Ariya as our first experience of Nissan’s (hopefully) bolder future. The first deliveries start next fall, Entry-level Ariya Venture the most accessible of the four, starting at $47,950. It packs 87-kWh the battery Powering a single e-motor with 238 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque helps spin the front axle for an estimated 300 miles. At the other end, the Ariya Platinum+ with e-4ORCE all-wheel drive uses the same battery to spin two motors that produce a total of 389 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque for up to 265 miles, price $60,125 MSRP.
