Nio adds ET5 Touring wagon to Europe as Model 3 rival, ends free battery swap


Chinese carmaker Nio is continuing to expand in Europe with new models, but is also ending free battery exchanges to boost profits.

Nio last week unveiled its first wagon, the ET5 Touring. It’s a wagon version of ET5a sedan roughly the size of the Tesla Model 3 was launched in 2021. The ET5 sedan was compete with the Model 3 in Nio’s home market, but the addition of a wagon body style will likely increase its appeal in Europe, where horse-drawn carriages are still popular.

In Europe, the ET5 Touring will be offered with a 75 kWh battery pack offering an estimated 270 miles of WLTP range, or a 100 kWh pack that increases range to 347 miles. Nio is also bringing a new electric SUV called the EL6 to Europe. Slightly longer than the ET5 Touring, it has the same dual-motor four-wheel drive system, with an estimated 0-100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds. Nio estimates the WLTP range to be 328 miles long.

Both the ET5 Touring and EL6 are on sale in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Denmark. The EL6 is available to order now—including via subscription—while deliveries of the ET5 Touring to Europe are expected to begin later this year.
