Looking back over the past few years, the video game industry in the UK has been in trouble. 2022 is no exception, with game and console sales falling for most of the year compared to last year. Gamesindustry.biz shared GfK figures, showing a 6% drop in total game sales in 2022 and a 29% drop in console sales.
At the last minute, the Switch outsold the PS5 to become the UK’s best-selling console of the year — despite sales falling just under 28% from 2021. But between the Switch, PS5 and Xbox Series , only 60,000 units separated all three, so it was a close call
The best-selling game won’t surprise anyone with fifa 23 topped the chart, followed by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and LEGO Star Wars: Skywalker Saga. The highest Switch exclusive rankings for 2022 in the UK are Nintendo Switch Sports, entered the top 10 best-selling games of the year. This doesn’t include digital sales, so who knows how many additional digital copies the game has changed since its April release.
Nintendo’s newest sports game is also the 4th best-selling physics game of the year, second only to Legendary Pokémon: Arceus. Luxury Mario Kart 8 and Pokémon Scarlet & Violet (sales are calculated separately for each version) were also among the best sellers of the year. Kirby and the Forgotten Land just slipped out of the top 30, ranked at number 31, with Splatoon 3 not too far behind at 38th place. Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope and Mario Striker: League of Legends at positions 62 and 80 respectively.

There were a few really nice surprises, such as Sonic Frontiers making it into the top 20. And despite the disappointing news of declining game sales, sales of new games did actually pick up a bit in the coming days. 2022. The 13.9 million games sold in 2022 in the UK are for brand new releases – meaning new titles will sell 20% more than in 2021. So thanks Pokémon, Elden Ring, etc!
