When I head down to the local state park, I expect stunning views, fresh air, and walking trails. I don’t expect a The lake is filled with rusty cars. However, visitors to Gleniffer Braes National Park in Scotland can experience the sight and smell of 30-year-old cars left in ruins.
Local authorities have known that the cars had been in the Lower Glen Dam Reservoir for at least four years. The reservoir is just over 7 miles from the center of Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city. In 2018, Police and Water Scotland sent divers into the reservoir to try and identify the vehicles. Scottish Water said in a statement, “The risk assessment was carried out back in 2018 to determine if any action should be taken. It is considered safer to leave the vehicles there and the situation will continue to be monitored.”
Scotland Water owns the Lower Glen Dam Reservoir and does not use the lake for drinking water. Even so, leaving abandoned cars lying in the water seems quite risky. When Scotland experienced a dry spell, the water level dropped enough to expose some vehicles to the air.
Nearby residents contacted their local representatives to get work done on the cars. Local councilor Stephen Burns told Glasgow Live, “There’s hardly any water in it and it totally stinks. I don’t think the cars are new, I think they’ve been there for a few years. People are wanting something done about it. “
Earlier this week, Scotland has finally found the dumped cars in just one day with the support of several other agencies. Vehicles removed from the tank were the Rover 827 1988, Citroen AX 1995, Ford Mondeo 1994, Citroen XM 1989, Nissan Prairie 1988, Vauxhall Astra 1987, Peugeot 605 1990, Vauxhall Carlton 1984 and Fiat Uno.
In a statement released by Scottish Water, the project manager said, “Our attention now turns to getting things back to normal in the park for everyone. We are filling the reservoir to its original level, in a controlled manner, and we are continuing to test the water quality to make sure there are no problems. Mother Nature will begin her journey and the people of Paisley can once again enjoy this space safely. ”
