The National Football League set out new diversity and inclusion efforts for the 2022 season at its annual owners meeting, such as requiring its 32 teams to employ “females or members of one ethnic group”. or racial minorities” as an assistant strike, the union said in a statement.

Applicants must have at least three years of college or professional experience in the field of football coaching. These people will receive a one-year contract with salary and benefits, the organization announced

For the roles, the NFL will reimburse teams up to $200,000 in 2022 and $205,000 in 2023 from the coach’s league fund.

“In recent years, head coaches have mostly come from uncomfortable backgrounds,” the NFL said. “We believe this resolution will greatly assist in continuing to find and identify diverse candidates earlier in their careers, providing pipeline depth and further accelerating pipeline development.” various attacks.”

According to federation data, the percentage of people of color in coaching positions has increased from 35% in 2020 to 39% in 2021.

During that time, the number of minority general managers increased from five to seven. The number of minority assistant superintendents increased from three to six, while the number of minority defense coordinators increased from 13 to 15.

“While the increase mentioned above is a positive step, our diversity has stagnated in our roles as head coach and special teams coordinator and has declined slightly in our executive roles. coordinated attack,” the union said in a statement.

The NFL will also now consider women for all eligible roles under the Rooney Rule, an initiative established in 2003, in which at least two “outside minorities” must be interviewed for head coach positions and a minority must be interviewed for the job of coordinator.

Previously, women could only meet requirements for positions such as club presidents and senior executives.

NFL teams are currently submitting their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) plans for the 2022 season. The union says some of the initiatives include “diversity recruitment,” “education and DEI training”, “hire DEI head” and “pay equity analysis”.

The statement also said the union would appreciate including people from diverse backgrounds when assessing potential ownership groups.

“While we have made important progress, we have much work ahead of us to ensure we are approaching DEI comprehensively – including the need to evaluate and adjust policies, incentives and additional requirements to ensure effectiveness and deliver better outcomes for women and people of color.”

According to the statement, senior coach hiring is less diverse, while league office work is taken up by 25% women and 20% people of color, the highest rates ever. .
