Next Jeep Cherokee Bigger, Offers Electrification – Report

Next generation Jeep Cherokee will be “bigger and better than ever,” but don’t expect it to come out this year.

That’s according to Jim Morrison, head of Jeep North America in a report from Motorcycle Trendsrepeat a previous report from Automotive News that said a New Cherokee Won’t Come Until 2025.

The brand’s global head, Christian Meunier, has also confirmed that it will have “a lot of electrification”, suggesting it could be another Jeep with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Jeep is launching plug-in hybrid models across its range under the name 4xe. There are 4xe versions of Extend, Compass, Grand Cherokee and Wranglerwith one Gladiator 4xe in the works and plug-in hybrid versions of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are expected.

This nameplate is currently used by a large SUV related to the Ram 1500. There is also a more luxurious Grand Wagoneer and an extended length. Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L.

According to sources, the smaller Wagoneer-branded model will launch in 2024 or 2025 and will likely use the STLA Large architecture.

This is understood to be an evolution of the current Giorgio architecture underpinning the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio and Jeep Grand Cherokee WL, although it has been configured for front, rear and all-wheel drive applications as well as internal combustion and electric powertrains.

The KM Cherokee may continue to offer a choice of front- or all-wheel drive, although its Wagoneer sibling is said to only come with all-wheel drive.

It’s unclear whether the Cherokee and Wagoneer will offer two or three rows of seats. In the US market, even mid-size SUVs offer a third row of seats in Australia like Honda CR-VA, Nissan X-Trail and Volkswagen Tiguan don’t provide one there.

While Jeep only sells the full-size three-row Grand Cherokee L SUV in Australia, it recently introduced Command / Meridiana Compass-based three-row SUV, intended for markets such as Latin America and India.

Jeep also sold an unrelated vehicle, Cherokee-based three-row SUV in China, Grand Commander, since 2018.

There is precedent for offering a model with a much smaller Wagoneer badge.

After the big SJ Cherokee ended production in 1983, its relationship with its high-end Grand Wagoneer continued. The smaller XJ Cherokee that entered production that year is also available as a higher-end Wagoneer.

The Wagoneer was replaced by the short-lived Cherokee Briarwood in 1990, and the Grand Wagoneer ended production in 1991.

Jeep dropped the Grand Wagoneer name for a flagship Grand Cherokee in 1993, but it lasted a year and the nameplate was dropped until the launch of current models in 2021.

While the mid-size SUV segment is one of the top-selling segments in markets like the US and Australia, Jeep hasn’t updated the Cherokee since 2018.

Sales have been steadily declining in recent years in its home market and outright growth here. For 2022, it has lost its front-wheel drive four-cylinder base model and is now offered exclusively with all-wheel drive and a V6 engine.

When it finally arrives, the new Cherokee will join a restored and expanded line of Jeep vehicles.

The company is developing a trio of electric SUVs. These include a small Polish-made SUV, possibly called the Jeepster, that has been revealed and will be launched in 2023, plus two SUVs – a rugged “white space” off-road vehicle and a family SUV – is said to debut in 2024.
