New York reports first polio case in US in almost a decade

A “young man” in Rockland, County New York, tested positive for polio. This is the first diagnosis in the United States in a decade.

Medical Doctor Patricia Schnabel Ruppert announced on Thursday.

Ruppert stated:

This patient presents with weakness and paralysis.

The diagnosis comes just a month after UK officials detected the polio virus in sewage samples in London but did not find any active cases.

This is the first case of polio diagnosed in the country since 2013, according to the report.

The risk to an unvaccinated community member from this event is still being determined,” said Ruppert Schnabel. “We strongly advise those who have not been vaccinated to get vaccinated.

Officials reported that the case came from a person who received the vaccine orally. It is believed to have originated in the country where the oral vaccine is still used.

Authorities also stated that the unnamed person had not traveled outside of the country before or after being diagnosed.

State Health Commissioner Mary T. Bassett stated:

Based on what we know about this case, and polio in general, the Department of Health recommends that unvaccinated individuals get vaccinated or boosted with the FDA-approved IPV polio vaccine as soon as possible. . The polio vaccine is safe and effective, protects against this potentially debilitating disease, and it is already a backbone part of the routine, mandatory immunization of children recommended by health officials. and national public health authorities recommended.

In 1952, cases of polio were very common. Polio infected 58,000 people, and 21,000 were paralyzed, in addition to 3,100 deaths.

Roomies, are you afraid it will spread like COVID-19?
