New York City Mayor Eric Adams is criticizing Texas Governor Greg Abbott for bringing caravans of migrant buses to the city, saying Abbott “used innocent people as political pawns to create a crisis.”

“Unlike Governor Abbott, New York City will always do our part,” Adams say via Twitterafter his office posted a picture of the mayor welcoming migrants and refugees to the Port Authority bus terminal in downtown Manhattan.

“This is horrible when you think about what [Abbot] doing,” Adams said on Sunday, according to Gothamist websitereports that more than 4,000 immigrants have arrived from Texas to date.

Thousands of migrants have been transported so far

New York is not alone: Abbott’s office says Texas has sent more than 6,100 migrants on buses to Washington, DC, as NPR reported. Both cities are now prime targets for Abbott’s program to send people who have recently crossed the US southern border to locations on the East Coast.

Both Adams and DC Mayor Muriel Bowser are asking for federal aid to help their cities deal with the new influx of migrants, many of whom are being supported by volunteers, nonprofits, and non-profit organizations. profits and shelter in addition to city agencies.

Abbott and Republican leaders in nearby border states are seeking to blame Democrats for the country’s protracted immigration crisis. On Friday, Abbott – who is running for re-election – mocked Adams’ description of New York as a “sanctuary city”, calling it “the ideal destination for migrants”.

Tough policies rolled out in an election year for Abbott

Even before Adams spoke, Abbott and his colleagues had been accused of taking a political stance on the immigration crisis, with critics arguing that politicians were risking their happiness. asylum seekers.

Abbott has announced a series of notable immigration policies this year, first as he faced two hardline conservative opponents in the GOP primaries and now as he tries to claimed the lead over Democratic candidate Beto O’Rourke ahead of the November vote.

Some of Abbott’s policies have drawn criticism from the governor in his own state: his April order to impose safety checks on trucks crossing the border from Mexico create a big slowdown and then blamed for billions of dollars in US trade losses.

Well-publicized border inspections by the Texas Department of Public Safety resulted in “no apprehension” Texas Public Radio reported.
