New tech partnership can bring AI, gaming to your car

California-based AI and computing giant Nvidia will cooperate with Taiwanese company Mediatek to enhance infotainment systems, which can deliver features such as artificial intelligence (AI), video streaming, and gaming.

Announcing the partnership at the Computex conference in Taipei, MediaTek CEO Rick Tsai and Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang explained that the companies will grow together. a new graphics processing unit (GPU) chiplet, allowing Nvidia to expand its automotive infotainment offering.

MediaTek is currently providing system-on-chip (SoC) technology to automakers and will integrate Nvidia’s GPU and AI software to enhance the US company’s infotainment offerings “above all.” car segments, from luxury to affordable”.

SoC integrates CPU (Central Processing Unit), GPU, RAM and other components on a single chiplet.

MediaTek will use Nvidia’s Drive, Drive IX, Cuda, and TensorRT operating systems on the new chiplet, ensuring to provide customers with Nvidia’s advanced driver assistance systems and safety features.

This new chipset will provide the computing power needed to support the rapid development and widespread use of AI in automotive safety and infotainment features.

Potential applications may include driver monitoring systems to assist autonomous driving; voice activation feature; and even in-cabin gaming and video streaming.

The Taiwanese company’s current Dimensity Auto platform supports video streaming, and its SoC software provides high dynamic range camera and audio processing, while supporting multiple monitors.

Nvidia’s RTX graphics cards can help with gaming, with the company initially standing out for producing hardware that helps run PC and console games.

Tsai envisions the partnership to create a “really unique platform for the computing-intensive, software-defined vehicle of the future.”

SoC products are initially scheduled to reach automakers by the end of 2025.

Also expected in 2025 is the integration of Nvidia’s Platform into Jaguar, Land Rover and Range Rover models.

Presumably, these future JLR models will benefit from the new technology brought about by this partnership, but the companies have yet to officially announce any of the automaker’s customers.

“With this partnership, our collaborative vision is to provide a one-stop shop for the automotive industry, designing the next generation of smart, always-connected vehicles,” said Mr. Tsai.

In-cabin entertainment is growing rapidly as tech giants like Google announce the introduction of new services like YouTube on the infotainment system.

Tesla also launched integrated Steam video game digital distribution service in the new Model S and Model X vehicles.

According to a press release from Nvidia, the partnership will give the company more access to the SoC market, which is expected to reach a value of US$12 billion ($18.35 billion) this year. .

Nvidia’s corporate value surged to nearly US$1 trillion (AU$1.5 trillion) last week after the company reported quarterly earnings that beat expectations.
