New SNOMED and LOINC collaboration seeks streamlined interoperability standards

LOINC from Regenstrief and SNOMED International announced this week a new collaboration designed to expand the application of standardized terminology to the worldwide exchange of medical data.

WHY IT IMPORTANT
The idea, the groups say, is to promote more coordinated use of SNOMED CT and LOINC by SNOMED International and Regenstrief – with the organizations each retaining editorial control over their respective standards.

In addition, the new agreement targets existing and potential deduplication, as SNOMED and LOINC are used by an ever more intersecting set of global implementers.

It will enable terminology to standardize and improve clinical interoperability, the groups say, while helping providers and users implement different combinations of both standards.

It will also help pave the way for the development of a LOINC extension that fits the SNOMED CT model – allowing SNOMED International and Regenstrief to distribute LOINC and SNOMED CT content together to their respective users.

The extension will generate both SNOMED CT and LOINC code for all concepts that are shared across terms – giving implementors a more unified approach to implementing both standards.

The new agreement updates and expands the relationship first launched in 2013 to link the clinical semantics of SNOMED with LOINC concepts that enable data identification, exchange, and collection across systems. medical.

Going forward, both the SNOMED CT and LOINC teams say they will provide opportunities for stakeholders to discuss joint work products and explore new collaborations.
