Continue a series of bookings League of Legends Riot Games today announced another game set in their MOBA world. Coming out next week, HexTech Mayhem: A League of Legends Story is a rhythm runner made by Choice Provisions, the studio behind the Bit.Trip games. It looks a lot like Bit.Trip, with a little wizard that runs and jumps and bombs in time to the beat. As well as a bunch of PC stores, it will be available inside the Netflix app. Bored.
Hextech Mayhem stars the Ziggs Alliance wizard who causes the explosions. He’ll be jumping over Piltover, the city suddenly better known for being one of the twin cities on the Netflix animated show, Arcane. And yup, it looks like Bit.Trip is fine.
HexTech Mayhem: A League of Legends Story Coming Soon Steam, GOG, and Epic game store on November 16, priced at £8. It will also be available on the Nintendo Switch and, most interestingly, “via the Netflix mobile app”. The announcement says it will be coming to Netflix “soon” and “included with your Netflix membership with no additional fees or in-app purchases.”
Netflix has taken bigger and bigger steps in video games. Starting with similarly licensed games based on their programs, they have bought the manufacturers of Oxenfree and I guess now releasing games connected to shows as part of a Netflix subscription? I can’t guess what their plans are, and Microsoft has fairly emphatically answered the question “What if Netflix for video games?” with Xbox Game Pass, but Netflix is doing… something? And I’m curious.
Riot also noted that “in the coming weeks” they will talk more about Ruined King: A League Of Legends Story, a single-player turn-based RPG set in Leagueland. Other byproducts they are known to have arrived include platformer Conv / rgence, a fighting game, an e-sports management game, and something that looks like action-RPG-y, although we haven’t heard much about those lately.
They went crazy with League around Arcane’s launch on Netflix over the weekend. All types intersect and modes and specials. Everyone seems to dig up Arcane from these first three episodes? I have to say I’m amazed that such a nice looking show grew out of such a colorful game.
