Nauru: Why Australia Funds an Empty Detention Center
Opinion polls seem to capture some of the change in attitudes towards immigration. In 2017, when asked whether refugees in Nauru and PNG should be allowed to settle in Australia, 45% agreed while 48% said no, according to the Lowy Institute think tank. This year, the poll found that 68% agreed that “openness to people from all over the world is essential for us as a country”, up 15 points from 2018.
