‘Twisters’ director doesn’t mention climate change: Movies shouldn’t ‘spread messages’
Director Lee Isaac Chung explains why his meteorological disaster film doesn’t mention global warming.

Excerpt: So if you were making a movie in 2024 about a tornado things never seen beforeThere’s a pretty handy raison d’être right there. Just have Daisy Edgar-Jones frantically look at some Doppler radar and mumble some actual research statistic like: “The Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society expected 6.6 percent nationwide the increased frequency of superstorms by the end of the century due to global warming — but nothing like this!” and suddenly your summer popcorn movie gets a little “but seriously, this maybe actually happen” semi-scientific weight.
But to hear director Lee Isaac Chung tell it, even such a meaningless quote is like hitting red-state moviegoers over the head with a DVD copy of An inconvenient truth.
“I just wanted to make sure that with this film, we never felt like it was conveying any message,” Chung told CNN“I just don’t feel like movies are meant to convey a message.”
There’s a scene where a local farmer played by Maura Tierney says that storms and floods are happening more frequently, but she doesn’t mention climate change.
“I think what we’re doing is showing the reality of what’s happening on the ground… we’re not afraid to say things are changing,” Chung added. “I want to make sure that we never come off as preaching a message, because that’s definitely not what I think cinema should be about. I think it should be a reflection of the world.”
