MotoGP 2022 – Round 19
MotoGP Sepang Race Report with Boris
Well, it was more intense than a chance meeting between his two current girlfriends. Like a real race, it’s less intense. Phillip Island is a very difficult act to follow.
As the last and possibly the second decisive battle in a yearlong war, it was amazing, state-of-the-art.
Rain was predicted for race day, but FP1 was dry, and somehow Brad Binder was at the top of the food chain. Pol Espargaro was in the toilet. He was penalized three points on the net for nearly killing Zarco when he “unsafe return to the track“.
Very helpful, Pol then went on to beat his brain in the remaining Practice and Qualifiers, and I’m wondering if Honda needs to start cannibalizing Malaysian Fireblades for his performance. him or not.
FP2 starts wet, but dries quickly as Cal Crutchlow unfurls on a set of slices and sits at the top of the timesheet.
The world returns to normal in dry FP3, after a strange incident left Morbidelli at the top of the list for a short time. Pecco failed and was rejected in no time.
So some big names have had to make it through Qualifier One to get to Qualifier Second, and things still look a bit shabby as race day approaches. Pecco, Marc Marquez, Jack, and Zarco were all successful in Q1, until Pecco and Marc took two leads that took them to Q2. Jack had a brutal tight throttle to add to his Phillip Island bruise, and landed himself 14th on the net.
It was fascinating to see Fabio’s face as he watched Pecco make his way into Q1. Feelingless… almost. He certainly knows what is at stake.
It’s even more fascinating to see Pecco’s girlfriend, Domizia, so nervous that she won’t look away as she kneels before the statue of the Virgin Mary with the rosary beads. That’s right, she was in the Ducati pit emitting the same fury as my old science teacher when I came to dissect the rats.
Fabulous broke a finger on his left hand during a training session, so his 12th place on the net is not a surprise. Pecco then failed in Q2 and was relegated to 9th place on the network. The captain, who lost his wheel from his championship bus two laps ago, was unable to get to the net higher than 10th place, so everyone who is playing for the championship is now in the middle of the field.
In the first row sat Jorge Martin, who had broken a new lap record around Sepang, and made his way up the post. The Beast is second and Marc Marquez is third.
Behind them were Bezzecchi, Rins and Marini – and Fabulous once again had an ocean of Ducatis to plow through.
Mathematically, if Pecco wins, and Fabulous comes in fourth or worse, then Davide Tardozzi can unbox the t-shirt he’s been carrying all year, and we’ll have a new world champion. Of course, there are other scenarios that see Pecco win, but that’s the one that applies in the race.
Pecco started brilliantly – he later said it was the best start of his career – and went from ninth to second thanks to the first corner. Martin had a header while Marc sat behind him, followed by Morbidelli and Fabulous, who also had a good start.
Franki’s presence at the end surprised and delighted me. But the double successful shot did not interest him. He committed a crime against the track and he must pay the price. And it cost him dearly. He looks ready to support teammate Fabulous in any way he can. And where have you been all year, Franki?
Martin quickly created distance in half a second for his tacklers, while Aleix sped towards the end of the field. Behind Pecco sat the Beast, and the more I looked, it looked like Pecco was picking up the Beast.
Fabulous is in a solid fifth place, and had a turning point overtaking Marc, which he did, only to be overtaken. But as one would expect of a defending world champion, he hit the next bat, and took fourth place.
This causes Marc to slowly sink into the clutches of Mir and Rins, both of whom are trying very hard to stay with the boys ahead. But no one was with Martin. Now, he has a one-second lead and is growing. Awesome, in fourth place, two points seven seconds behind Pecco and the Beast.
Bezzecchi is also starting to make his game and he has moved up behind Mir and Rins, and the three are preparing to hit Marc.
The Ducati pit was tense, but when Martin suddenly jumped out and gave Pecco the lead, the leash became as tight as a piano string. Pecco’s girlfriend couldn’t bring me to find her.
So Pecco leads, Beast follows, and almost three seconds later he is Fabulous. Bezzecchi overtook Rins and Mir, and is currently edging out Marc Marquez for fourth place.
If you catch and beat Fabulous, and Pecco wins, Pecco will be crowned champion. Since Bezzecchi is now also the fastest on the track, this seems a distinct possibility. There are careful smiles in the Ducati garage.
And every one of them was wiped out when Beast overtook Pecco, sending him relegation to second place, and leaving the championship still within Fabulous’s reach.
The pitiful Ducati became a site of great activity. All the myrmidons in Bologna are having gatherings, and meetings, and running to and from the screens on the cellar wall. Even Gigi ventured out of his cave to consult with Tardozzi et al. Pecco’s aunt has lost her mind and is now praying.
And so it went through a whole lotta round. Beast is ahead of Pecco, Fabulous is 2.7 seconds behind them – he’s as fast as them (and sometimes a bit faster), but he needs to go faster if he wants to catch them before the end of the race .
His other problem is that Bezzecchi is closing in on him, and the Ducati garage is getting more frantic than ever with each passing lap. They have been waiting for a title since 2007. They won the Producers championship and will see the Team Championship going to Bologna at the end of the race. But Ducati wants the Riders Championship. Bad.
Five laps over, Pecco overtook Beast. It looks legit. The Beast then said then he found it impossible to get past Pecco. He didn’t seem to be in any trouble before, but who knows? Maybe his tire was blown. Well, that would be it, right?
Six laps from the end, Fabulous started climbing above both. He managed to keep the Bezzecchi flying with a feat of equestrian skill that cannot be underestimated – he was only overshadowed by Jack Miller, who returned to sixth speed after returning to th. 21 in one leg.
But it was too late for Fabulous to finish in second or even first. However, the championship is still alive. Tardozzi may have cut the tape on the box of his T-shirt, but now he has to bring that carton to Spain – and hopes that Fabulous will crack before Pecco.
It will be epic.
