The city of 26 million people has faced harsh lockdown measures as part of China’s strict zero COVID policy, which bans residents from leaving their homes and relies on the government for food delivery.
Other measures that have been put in place include fences up to two meters high being erected around the housing estates.
Authorities in Shanghai are slowly starting to ease lockdown restrictions that were in place for the entire city in early April.
The government said on Friday that up to 12.38 million Shanghai residents, nearly half the population of China’s financial hub, are in lower-risk areas, meaning that they can leave home.
Local authorities said on Sunday there were 32 new COVID-19 deaths, down from 38 a day earlier.
A total of 6,606 new localized asymptomatic coronavirus cases were recorded in Shanghai on Sunday, compared with 7,084 cases the day before, authorities said.
