Mitsubishi D:X Concept PHEV previews next-gen Delica off-road MPV with electric 4WD, rotating seats

Mitsubishi has unveiled the D:X Concept at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, offering a preview of the next-generation Delica. The D:X Concept is an electrified crossover, says Mitsubishi, and aims to combine “the convenient, pleasant and roomy cabin space of an MPV with the superb road handling of an SUV.”

Touted as a vehicle that “supports an active mobility lifestyle as a reliable companion for various adventures,” the D:X Concept is based on the design concept of “maximum space and safety for humans, maximum off-roader for boundaryless adventure.”

Its Delica heritage is drawn upon with side window graphics which extend from the front of its cabin to its D-pillar, while the sense of spaciousness in front is created by the front windscreen that extends downwards into the bodywork.

Off-roading aspirations are shown with its wheel arch extensions and chunky off-road tyres, along with front and rear skid plates and side sill protectors. Its T-shaped headlamp assemblies use laser lights, accompanied by DRLs in the front edge of each front wheel arch as well as roof-mounted auxiliary lights.

The D:X Concept is described as featuring a PHEV powertrain, though the manufacturer did not reveal further details about the system, save to say that it employs the S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) system for its electric 4WD driveline and which can be driven in EV mode. S-AWC is also used for the Outlander PHEV, where electric motors drive both front and rear wheels.

Inside, the single-box bodystyle offers a spacious cabin which houses seats which can rotate for occupants to face each other. For the driver, the large windscreen which extends downwards is augmented by a camera feed that enables occupants to virtually ‘see’ through the bodywork for a better view of the terrain immediately ahead, as well as to see the angle of the front wheels.

The cabin of the D:X Concept gets genuine leather for its dashboard and seats, while metal trim pieces bring accents and add to the sense of quality, says Mitsubishi. Audio comes courtesy of Yamaha, which brings a setup that includes speakers within the headrests of the seats, aiming to provide immersive three-dimensional sound.
