Mitole Colt Headlines Day 1 of OBS Winter Mixed Sale
The Winter Mixed Sale at Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company kicked off the central Florida sales season Jan. 23 with a short-yearling colt by Mitole taking top honors after selling for $95,000 to Calumet Farm. Danielle Loya’s Silver Oaks Farm consigned him as Hip 87 to the preferred sessions of the sale.
Bred in Kentucky by Kathie Maybee, the colt is the third foal out of the winning Terrell mare Wild Hickory and was a $45,000 RNA at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale last year. His 4-year-old Wicked Strong brother, Devilish Desire, has made four starts on the West Coast with trainer Mark Glatt and hasn’t been off the board.
Wild Hickory is a half sibling to the multiple graded stakes winner Alert Bay , by City Zip , an earner of $1,342,813 for owner Peter Redekop.
A few hips later, Latinos y mas paid $85,000 for a Charlatan short-yearling filly from the Summerfield draft. Consigned by Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck as Hip 110, the Kentucky-bred filly out of Charge of Angles is a half sibling to the Iowa Derby-placed Winning Number , by Speightstown.
She comes from the family of graded winners Girolamo , Daydreaming , Accelerator, Bluegrass Cat , Lord of the Game , and Dramedy .
Latinos y mas also purchased the third-highest offering, a Practical Joke colt offered as Hip 80 by Beth Bayer for $75,000. With their two purchases, Latinos y mas was the leading buyer for Day 1.
Summerfield also consigned a Yaupon colt named Mighty Yaupon who realized $85,000 from Love’s Equine, agent for Classic Automations. Out of the stakes-placed War Front mare Mighty Souper , Hip 30 was bred in Florida by Dominique Damico and is a half brother to recent stakes winner Forever Souper .
The 5-year-old American Pharoah gelding provided a timely update to the page by winning the Jan. 21 Sunshine Turf Stakes at Gulfstream Park for owner Live Oak Plantation.
An unraced Ohio-bred 3-year-old filly by Enticed was consigned as Hip 227 and sold as the highest horse of racing age for $70,000 to Emerald Sales, agent for KEM Stables. Consigned by Gutierrez Sales, the dark bay or brown filly out of Pyrite Storm worked three-eighths in :33 Jan. 22 during the under tack show.
Emerald Sales, agent for KEM Stables, was the leading buyer by gross of the horses of racing age portion with its single purchase.
Trust Me , a 4-year-old filly by The Big Beast , consigned as Hip 77 by Summerfield, sold for $50,000 to Speriamo to be the highest-priced broodmare prospect. A winner who placed in the Florida Sire Desert Vixen Stakes and Azalea Stakes, she earned $110,190 in six starts, all of which were on the board.
Beth Bayer sold Rainbows and Roses to FMQ Stables for $23,000 to be the top broodmare offering Tuesday. The 6-year-old Bodemeister mare sold in foal to Roadster and comes from the fast family of stakes winner Granny MC’s Kitten , sister to grade 1 winner Kitten’s Dumplings and grade 3 winner Granny’s Kitten .
Bayer sold 22 horses Monday for a $368,200 gross to be the leading consignor for the preferred session for Day 1, and Summerfield led the horses of racing age portion with receipts of $110,500 for four horses sold.
OBS reports 75 of the 108 horses offered in the preferred session sold for gross receipts of $1,738,400, showing a 35.5% decline over the 2023 session. The average price fell 14.9% to $23,179, and a $16,000 median, down 20%, was recorded. An RNA rate of 30.6% represents the 33 horses who failed to meet their reserve.
The Horses of Racing Age session took a big hit over last year, with 26 head selling of the 38 through the ring for a $505,000 gross, down 68.1%. The average price dropped 16.5% to $19,423, and the median rose 10% to $11,000. Twelve horses failed to attain their reserve to represent a 31.6% RNA rate.
