Denver – After a worldwide PETA campaign, locally based Millennium Hotels and Resorts – owner of The Lakefront Anchorage hotel – has confirmed that the nearly 30-year streak has supported the Iditarod, the infamous sled dog race. The reputation for more than 150 dead dogs will end this year.

This decision was made after a call from nearly 500,000 PETA supporters and a campaign that included Bus advertising in Anchorage, “MillstoneHellium advertising” in the hotel magazine, a billboard near Millennium’s New York Times Square hoteland dozens of demonstrations around the world, from Alaska to New Zealand to Paris.

PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman said: “Champagne corks are ringing around the world as news that Millennium Hotels and Resorts is examining Iditarod’s cruelty to dogs.” “PETA can now turn its attention to the dwindling number of sponsors who are still willing to sponsor a race that runs their dogs to death.”

Up to half of the dogs that start the Iditarod don’t finish it. During the 2021 race, nearly 200 dogs were pulled off the trail from exhaustion, illness, injury, or other causes, forcing the rest to work harder. The leading cause of death for dogs on the Iditarod trail is aspiration pneumonia – caused by inhaling their own vomit – and the race’s official death toll does not include the multitude of other dogs that have been affected. killed simply because they weren’t fast enough or who died during the off-season while chained next to crumbling boxes or plastic crates in the freezing cold, a practice revealed in a PETA insurance investigation.

Millennium joins ExxonMobil — a former lead sponsor that paid the race $250,000 a year — as well as Jack Daniel’s, Coca-Cola, Wells Fargo, Alaska Airlines and dozens of other companies severing ties with Iditarod. . Only a few major corporate sponsors remain, such as Liberty Media subsidiary GCI — and more recently PETA bought stock in Liberty Broadband to push it to give up its sponsorship.

PETA is moving a planned protest to a party tomorrow outside the Millennium Hotel in Chicago, and PETA Asia is canceling an advertising campaign against Millennium in Singapore, where the parent company’s headquarters are located. of the chain.

PETA — in part, their motto that “animals are not ours for amusement” — advocates for speciesism, a human worldview – supremacy. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebookor Instagram.
