The sources added that the Spaniard will receive a significant increase on his current salary of £9 million a year ($11.7 million).

Arsenal have finished second to City in each of the last two seasons and will look to close the gap by adding Riccardo Calafiori And Mikel Merino throughout the summer, in addition to the delayed lending Raheem Sterling from Chelsea.

Sources told ESPN that Arteta played a key role in convincing these players to join the club, underlining his integral role in Arsenal’s pursuit of success.

Odegaard was seen flying back to London on crutches after injuring his ankle on international duty with Norway, and sources told ESPN he is likely to miss Sunday’s game and could be sidelined for a while longer.

Norwegian doctor Ola Sand told the Norwegian newspaper VG Odegaard did not suffer a broken bone, adding: “Ankle injuries like that usually take at least three weeks. Anything beyond that is just a bonus and then it can take longer.”
