Mid-sized cars have the largest boot space in Australia
Although the selection of more affordable midsize cars has dwindled in recent years, there’s still a lot to offer in terms of trunk space.
It’s hard to know what will get you the most in terms of style and practicality, especially in a segment with more four-door sedans than wagons and hatches.
To help figure out which cars can give you the most cargo space at the right price, we’ve broken down our midsize options under $60,000 on our sales rankings. of VFACTS to see what comes out on top.
We’ve only listed the variant of each model with the most cargo space in the standard seating configuration, because that’s how we predict most people will transport cargo in their daily driving. .
This segment is also dominated by sedans, so standard space metrics are much more consistent across vehicle types.
The only two non-sedans are wagons from Mazda and Skoda, while there’s an electric vehicle branded with the BYD Seal.
You will notice that many cars do not have figures for trunk space when the seats are folded. That’s because this isn’t a number that most brands offer for their sedans, due to the odd shape of the storage area on flat-seat sedans.

Skoda Octavia
The Octavia is the only European car on this list, and the wagon has the largest trunk with a seating capacity of 640L.
With the rear seats folded, that figure increases to an impressive 1700L, which in the base 110TSI Style will give you a serious return. At $43,990 drive away, this is one of the cheapest cars here.
For $58,490 drive away you can buy the top-spec 180TSI RS wagon, which gets a more powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged engine than the base model’s 1.4-litre. You still get the same space in the trunk.
If you want to get closer to a sedan, you can opt for the convertible variants of the Style and RS, which cost $42,490 and $56,990 drive-away respectively. They have a standard 600L boot, which can be expanded to 1555L with the seats folded.

Honda is suitable
The Accord is only sold in Australia in one sedan variant and has a fairly large 570L boot.
At $64,900, the e:HEV RS sits at the top of its price range. It’s the most expensive car here and the second most spacious option in the more affordable midsize segment.
Despite its size, Honda only provides you with a tire repair kit in place of any spare wheel. It has a 5-year, unlimited km warranty according to segment standards.

Toyota Camry
The Camry comes in five sedan variants and its hybrid options all share the same 524L of boot space.
Four hybrid options start with the Ascent hybrid at $37,917 before on-road costs and reach $51,417 before on-road costs for the range-topping SL Hybrid, and all offer a space saver to spare.
If that’s too much and you don’t want a hybrid, the range starts with the gas Ascent at $35,051 before on-roads. It has a smaller 493L boot but is the only car with a full-sized alloy spare.

Mazda 6

When you fold the rear seats, the wagon’s trunk expands to 1648L and you get a space-saving spare space. If you want a sedan there are plenty of options, but they have a smaller trunk at 474L.
All five variants of the Mazda 6 come in sedan and wagon options, and the range starts with the naturally aspirated G25 Sport sedan at $36,140 before on-roads.
Topping the chart is the turbo G35 20th Anniversary wagon, priced at $55,535 before on-roads.

Hyundai Sonata
Like the Accord, the Sonata is sold in only one variant. It’s an N-Line sedan and has a 480L trunk.
However, this is the most powerful car on this list, so practicality isn’t necessarily a primary concern. It has a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 213kW of power and 422Nm of torque – well ahead of the other cars on this list.
Hyundai also includes a space-saving spare wheel instead of removing it in the performance-oriented Sonata, which provides extra safety if you’re unlucky enough to get a flat tire.

BYD seal
The BYD Seal is the only midsize electric car priced under $60,000 on the VFACTS chart, but its boot is smaller than the rest at 400L.
It’s sold in just three variants, with prices ranging from $49,888 to $68,748 before on-road costs.
The 400L trunk is on par with the Nissan Leaf electric hatchback, which is in the segment below.
It also doesn’t use any kind of spare wheel and just gives you a tire repair kit to keep you going if something goes wrong.
