Microsoft Harnesses ChatGPT to Boost Bing — and Beat Google

Bing’s new chat style interface is a big difference from the traditional search box. During a demonstration, Microsoft’s vice president of search and devices, Yusef Mehdi, asked the chatbot to write a 5-day itinerary for a trip to Mexico City, then translate what it came up with into an email. that he can send to his family. The bot’s response credited its source—a series of links to travel sites—at the end of its lengthy response. “We care a lot about getting content back to creators,” says Mehdi. “We make it easy for people to click through to get to those sites.”

Microsoft has also incorporated aspects of ChatGPT’s underlying technology into a new sidebar for the company’s Edge browser. Users can prompt the tool to summarize a long and complex financial document or compare it with another document. The chatbot can be prompted to translate those insights into emails, lists, or social media posts with a specific tone, such as professional or humorous. In the demo, Mehdi directed the bot to create an “enthusiastic” update to post to his profile on the company’s LinkedIn social media service.

ChatGPT caused a stir since OpenAI Launching chatbot in November, amazes and delights users with fluent, clear answers to written questions and prompts. Bots based on GPT-3, an OpenAI algorithm that is trained on a batch of text from the web and other sources using the patterns it has chosen to generate its own text. Some investors and entrepreneurs have heralded technology as a revolutionwith the potential to upend almost any industry.

Some AI experts have call for cautionwarning that the ChatGPT . platform technology unable to distinguish between fact and fictionand susceptible to “hallucinations”—fabricating information in detailed and sometimes convincing ways. Text generation technology was also shown likely to copy unhealthy language found in its training data.

Sarah Bird, Microsoft’s head of responsible AI, said today that early tests showed the tool could help someone plan an attack on a school, but the tool is currently out of reach. can “identify and combat” the use of chatbots for that type of harmful query. She said OpenAI’s human and technology testers will work together to rapidly test, analyze and improve the service.

Bird also admits that Microsoft has yet to fully address the problem of hallucinogens. “We have improved it a lot since we started, but there is still a lot of work to be done there,” she said.

OpenAI started as a non-profit organization focused on making AI profitable, but it was already a commercial venture with Significant investment from Microsoft since 2019and it recently received a new commitment from the tech giant worth about 10 billion USD.

Microsoft commercialized a version of the text generation technology inside ChatGPT in the form of Copilot, a tool help developers by creating programming code. Microsoft says that tests show that Copilot can reduce the time it takes to complete a coding task by 40%.
