The Michigan Attorney General has recommended investigating the events that led to last week’s shooting that claimed the lives of four high school students.
“We have reached out to an attorney for the Oxford Community School District and have provided the services of Michigan [Department] of the Attorney General to conduct a complete and comprehensive review of the “shooting incident” and the events that led to the shooting,” Attorney General Dana Nessel speak Sunday morning on Twitter.
“Our attorneys and agents are uniquely qualified to carry out an investigation of this magnitude and are prepared to conduct an extensive investigation and investigation to answer many of the community’s questions regarding the matter.” regarding this tragedy,” she added.
In one letter to school district on Saturday, Superintendent Tim Throne said he had requested a third-party investigation. Nessel said to Detroit News that her office would be the “perfect agency” to investigate the shooting.
“I don’t want to see the school district put a private law firm in … where they are the client,” Nessel said. “I’ve seen it time and time again, they weren’t quite independent investigations when it happened.”

Nessel explains that the state attorney general’s office is in the best position to determine not only whether criminal law has been violated, but also whether there have been any civil violations. “We want to answer all the questions parents have about this,” says Nessel NS Detroit Free Press.
Nessel said she emailed the district’s attorney on Saturday with a similar offer, but had yet to receive a response Sunday afternoon. NPR reached out to the school district for comment Sunday night, but did not receive an immediate response.
“We’re not there to protect or prosecute anyone,” Nessel told Detroit NBC branch. “We’re just there to find out what the truth is.”
The parents of the suspected shooter, Ethan Crumbley, were charge with four counts of involuntary manslaughter. School officials informed Jennifer and James Crumbley of multiple incidents involving their son prior to the shooting. On the morning of the shooting, a teacher found a piece of paper on Crumbley’s desk with a drawing of a semiautomatic handgun and the words, “thoughts won’t stop,” “help me.” ” and “blood everywhere,” according to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office. Another drawing shows a person apparently bleeding from a gunshot wound.
After the teacher found the drawings, Crumbley was sent to the guidance counselor’s office, where he said they were part of a video game he was designing. “At no time should counselors believe that a student can cause harm to others based on calm behavior, response and conduct,” Throne wrote in a letter to the school community.
In that letter, Throne said he asked for a third-party investigation into “all of the events of the past week because our community and families deserve full, transparent accounting.” about what happened.”
