The City of Miami Beach has declared a state of emergency in addition to an upcoming curfew to curb violence across the city this spring break.
The move by officials comes after shootings last weekend left five people injured.
In one news conference Monday with the Miami Beach Police Department and other city officials, Mayor Dan Gelber said that tourists have created an “unacceptable” atmosphere across the city and that the city has been “going beyond its endpoint.”
The mayor stressed that he, along with city officials, did not ask for spring break to go to Miami Beach, but simply endured it.
“It’s simply unacceptable on any level,” says Gelber. “We simply cannot take this anymore.”
The newly implemented emergency order will allow Miami Beach City Manager, Alina Hudak, to impose a curfew. Hudak, who signed the order on Monday, said that going into effect on Thursday starting at 12:01 a.m., the midnight curfew would go into effect and last until 6 a.m. on March 28.
