Mexico beat Saudi Arabia 2-1 – but not enough to qualify for the knockout round
Argentina advanced to the Round of 16 after beating Poland 2-0 on Wednesday.
The Argentinians dominated the match and had several other misses. Lionel Messi also failed to score a penalty in the first half after Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny made a brilliant save with his right hand in the 39th minute.
Szczesny was spectacular in the first half, time and time again repelling Argentine attacks. The Polish goalkeeper made nine remarkable saves in the first half.
In the second half, Argentina’s attacking power finally showed in the 46th minute, when Alexis Mac Allister made a pass from Nahuel Molina past Szczesny.
Julian Alvarez doubled La Albiceleste’s lead in the 68th minute with a shot into the top right corner to open the scoring.
With the victory, Argentina surpassed Group C with 6 points. It will face Australia in the next round.
Despite the loss, Poland still won runner-up and will next face France.
